Tom Kimani, Ph.D., Lead Manager, Training Programme
Dr. Tom Kimani is Lead Manager, Training Programme, responsible for the planning and
management of the training programmes, as well as monitoring and evaluation of the
implementation of the AERC Strategic Plan. He is also in-charge of the programmatic activities of
the Collaborative Masters Programme (CMAP) in Economics comprising 26-member universities
in sub-Saharan Africa and the Collaborative PhD Programme (CPP) in Economics consisting of 8-
degree awarding universities in Africa. Prior to joining AERC in July 2012, Dr. Kimani was the
founding Dean of the School of Economics at Kenyatta University from 2008-2012, where under his
leadership, a doctorate degree programme in Economics by coursework, examination and thesis,
as well as several unique Bachelors and Masters degree programmes in Economics, were developed,
leading to rapid expansion of the School. He taught at undergraduate and postgraduate level
Microeconomics and International Economics. He has supervised and mentored several PhD
students. He obtained his doctorate degree in Economics in 2005 from Claremont Graduate
University in California, USA, and his MSc. in Economics from Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia
in 1995. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) degree from Kenyatta University in 1992.
He is a CMAP alumnus. In his private life, Dr. Kimani is an ordained Pastor serving the community
with great zeal.
Mark K. Korir, Ph.D., Manager, Training Programme
Since 2015 to date, Mark has been the Manager responsible for the Collaborative Masters in
Agricultural and Applied Economics (CMAAE) Programme at AERC. This programme covers 17
departments of Agricultural Economics in 13 East, Central and Southern Africa countries with the
objective of capacity building in graduate training for informed policy analysis and implementation
in the agriculture, food security and related themes. Some of the programme activities coordinated
include scholarship awards, curriculum review, dissemination workshops, faculty retooling,
graduate internships, faculty exchange, and coordination of several research projects. The research
projects include Agricultural Policy Analysis for Nutrition Outcomes (AFPON), Inventory of SocioEconomic Land Data in Africa (ISELDA), Analysis of Beef and Agricultural Value Chains in SSA,
Programme Accompanying Research for Innovation (PARI), and Policy & Administrative Response
to the COVID 19 in the EAC, among others. Prior to joining AERC, Mark was a Senior Lecturer at
Moi University lecturing Agricultural Policy, Agricultural Marketing and Price Analysis,
Agricultural Extension and Agricultural Commodity Trade. He also worked as a Senior Agricultural
Officer at the Policy and Agricultural Development Coordination Department at the Ministry of
Agriculture, Nairobi, Kenya as the Project Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for governmentimplemented projects. His publications are on smallholder production efficiency, cross border
trade in agricultural commodities, nutrition, and export trade in food products, among others. He
has served as the Guest Editor for Special Issues of the African Journal of Agricultural and Resource
Economics (AfJARE) and the Food Policy.
Evar Kiambuthi, Lead Programme Administrator
Evar Kiambuthi (CPA-K, MBA) is a Finance and Grants management professional with over 18 years
wealth of experience in not-for-profit Finance, Accounting, Compliance, Grants and Program
management. Having worked with AERC for 13 years in different capacities and in multi-donor
funded projects that form the Training and Research programs of AERC. Always ready to build
capacity and contribute to a pool of well-equipped professionals within the Economists spectrum.
Some travel and fun along the way doesn’t hurt either.
Paul Mburu, Programme Administrator
Paul is responsible for the efficient and effective administration of the CMAP and CPP Joint Facility
for Electives (JFE) and the CMAAE Shared Facility for Specialization and Electives (SFSE), flagship
programmes of AERC’s Training Department. A seasoned Human Resources and Programme
Administration professional with over 25 years’ experience in this field, Paul previously worked as
a HR professional with the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) and Action Aid
International (AAI), before joining the AERC in a similar capacity. He has worked with AERC’s
Training Programme for over 14 years and is a recipient of AERC’s long-service award for
distinguished and dedicated service to capacity-building in Sub-Saharan Africa. He is a holder of
B.A. (Public Administration); H.N. Dip. (HR Management) and has attended numerous short-term
professional courses over the years.
Lawrence Kaberi, Programme Administrator
Lawrence joined AERC in March 2021 as the Programme Administrator. He works closely with the
Lead Programme Administrator in supporting the efficient and effective administration of all grants
and awards provided by the Training Programme as well as the financial administration relating to
departmental activities. He previously worked in a professional audit firm where he provided
consulting services to several local and international NGOs. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce
degree in Accounting from the University of Nairobi and is a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya.
During his free time, Lawrence enjoys being with his family and engaging in community projects.
Lawrence is a self-driven individual with high levels of innovation, creativity, and performance.
Daniel Njiru, Knowledge Management Administrator
Daniel joined AERC in February 2022 as the Knowledge Management Administrator. He works
closely with the Training department as well as communications. He is responsible for the
eLearning technologies, library systems and publication repositories. Daniel Previously worked at
university of Embu as a System Librarian, IEBC and Mediamax Network IT department as a System
Support person. He holds a Bsc. Information science and currently pursuing Msc. in Information Technology (Machine learning & Data Science).
Bertha Chedeye Mugone, Programme Assistant
Bertha Mugone has been a Programme Assistant, Training Department at the AERC since 2010. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (Finance Option) and is pursuing a Master of Arts in Development Studies. She has knowledge on Project Management, and good organizational skills. She is fluent in Portuguese.
